We're off to San Francisco to celebrate New Year's with Patrick's high school friends. I hope you all have a good night!

P.S. We ate brunch at Joanie's this morning, and the people at the table next to us found a baby cockroach near their sugar container! They got moved to a new table, and they got their meal for free, and the cockroach was smushed, so everyone was happy. Joanie's seems like a nice clean place, but I guess bugs can happen to everyone! We'll still be going there again.

Patrick and I just made a tasty dinner. It's good having him around, because we actually got everything finished at about the same time, which is much easier with two people working than one.

Baked Dijon Salmon - We'd had this one before. It's good, but I only like the part with the topping; the bulk of the fish isn't very exciting. Guess I should try and get thinner salmon fillets so the flavor is more evenly distributed.

Leek and Fennel Mashed Potatoes - I made these in an attempt to reproduce the mashed potatoes I had at Nokhu. They were, of course, not the same (I'm guessing Nokhu used sour cream and butter, which weren't in this recipe). But they were very tasty, though not particularly creamy (we used whole milk, which probably added a little more creaminess). In the future, we'd probably run the fennel though a food processor or just chop it more finely, since it made the potatoes pretty chunky.

Winter Greens and Black-Eyed Peas - My dad and Vicki told me that it's traditional to eat black-eyed peas on New Year's to bring good luck for the upcoming year, so I thought I'd try a recipe involving them. These greens turned out pretty tasty (we used kale and turnip greens), but kind of dry. Patrick said they were a little too bitter for him, so maybe next time we'll use something other than kale. But he likes the beans and greens together. And prosciutto makes everything better!

So that was a pretty good cooking adventure. I'm glad Patrick was here to eat it too and give feedback. Now he's playing Prince of Persia (he bought it this afternoon).

Um...what else? I passed up a chance to visit the new IKEA today because I wasn't feeling energetic enough for it. Maybe we'll go later this week. We had lunch at Il Fornaio, but neither of us was very hungry, so we have half a pizza sitting in the fridge. (It was prosciutto, arugula, mushroom, and truffled parmesan pizza, which wasn't all that great--I don't think I like shaved parmesan).

Oh, and I found this book about growing your own fruits and vegetables at Borders for only $6 on the clearance table, so now I have my first gardening book! The only thing it's missing is info about citrus trees, but other than that, it looks pretty comprehensive for a $6 book. Patrick says his dad has a copy of the Sunset Western Garden Book somewhere, so maybe we can snag that when we actually have a place to put a garden.

Also, we got pearl milk tea at Q-Cup again (we also stopped there on the way back from the airport on Saturday night). And we got a frequent drinker card (we had to ask for one specifically--they didn't have any on display), so now after we buy 10 drinks, we get one free. I feel inordinately proud about that :)

Today's a rainy day. We went out this morning to LensCrafters so Patrick could get a new contact lens prescription (I'm a good nagger), but we've stayed in other than that. I just made hard-boiled eggs (which Patrick hates, but there were a dozen eggs in his fridge that were about to expire), and now we're going to try to make a shopping list. Not very exciting, but I like it.

Yesterday, we had lunch at Patrick's dad's house with his cousin Jenny, who was visiting from Arizona. She's in grad school too, and she seemed to be liking it better than us, but still not loving it. Her boyfriend Juan came along too, and they told us stories about crossing the Mexican border (they have to do that a lot because they're studying birds south of the border).

Oh, and we had dinner yesterday at Darbar, which is a nice Indian place in downtown Palo Alto. We had Chicken Tika Masala and a very tasty okra dish in a tomato-cream sauce, plus rice and naan, of course. I had some of the leftovers for breakfast this morning. I love being on vacation!

I'm safely at Patrick's place, trying to help him with the Sunday crossword puzzle. My trip from Colorado to California was decent. The door on the Fort Collins airporter shuttle kept blowing open on the freeway, so one of the other passengers (a middle-aged guy in a cowboy hat) had to sit in the front of the bus and hold the door closed. His wife threatened to sue if we got in an accident and he got hurt. I guess that's fair. Oh, and the driver kept turning around to talk to an old lady from Wyoming who was sitting behind him. That was kind of worrisome, but we got there in one piece, and it gave me something to write about!

My flight was good, except the lady next to me reeked of chicken boullion, and it rubbed off on me, because Patrick could smell it on me when he picked me up at the airport. He thought it smelled like the seasoning packet in chicken ramen. Yuck, yuck, yuck! I mean, it's an okay smell if you're eating chicken soup, but as a general fragrance, it's not so nice. But I seem to have aired out since last night, and I smell like a normal person again. Phew!

I'm very happy to be with Patrick--we're having a grand old time! But I was sad to say good-bye to my family too, since I had a good visit with them. I'm lucky to have so many people I like being around!

My mom and I finished watching season 2 of Sex and the City last night, and she hadn't rented seasons 3 or 4, so I'm left high and dry, waiting to find out what happens. I've gotten sucked in! Maybe I can convince Patrick to rent and watch them with me while I'm visiting him...

The weird thing was that after finishing season 2, we watched Kissing Jessica Stein, and there were like two or three people in that who had also appeared in Sex and the City. Weird...

I'm heading off to the airport in a few hours to go see Patrick! I'm glad we get to spend New Years together. Now I'm going to go downstairs and watch my mom try to feed Mister the cat sedatives so she can clip his claws. Fun!
